Prophets and Kings

Mo. 7/28/14: 2 Kings 9:1 – 4a                  What did the son of the prophet do?
And Elisha the prophet called one of the sons of the prophets, and said to him, “Get yourself ready, take this flask of oil in your hand, and go to Ramoth Gilead. Now when you arrive at that place, look there for Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi, and go in and make him rise up from among his associates, and take him to an inner room. Then take the flask of oil, and pour it on his head, and say, ‘Thus says the Lord: “I have anointed you king over Israel.”’ Then open the door and flee, and do not delay.” So the young man, the servant of the prophet, did so.
What did the son of the prophet do?  He anointed Jehu king.
Tu. 7/29/14: 2Kings 11:17 – 18b                  What did Jehoiada do?
Then Jehoiada made a covenant between the Lord, the king, and the people, that they should be the Lord’s people, and also between the king and the people. And all the people of the land went to the temple of Baal, and tore it down. They thoroughly broke in pieces its altars and images, and killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars.
What did Jehoiada do? Jehoiada tore down the altars and images
We. 7/30/14: 2 Chronicles 24:8 – 12                  What was collected?
Then at the king’s command they made a chest, and set it outside at the gate of the house of the Lord. And they made a proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem to bring to the Lord the collection ... Then all the leaders and all the people rejoiced, brought their contributions, and put them into the chest until all had given … Thus they did day by day, and gathered money in abundance.
The king and Jehoiada gave it to those who did the work of the service of the house of the Lord; and they hired masons and carpenters to repair the house of the Lord ...
What was collected? The offering collected restored the Temple.
Th. 7/31/14: Luke 21:1 – 3                  What did the widow do?
And He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury … also a certain poor widow putting in two mites. So He said, “Truly I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all;
What did the widow do? The widow put in more than all.
Fr. 7/28/14: 1 Corinthians 16:1 –2                  What should the saints do?
         Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given orders to the churches of Galatia, so you must do also. On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come.

What should the saints do? Lay aside first each week.

Day of the LORD

Mo. 7/21/14: Joel 2:1                  Why was an alarm sounded?
      Blow the trumpet in Zion,
      And sound an alarm in My holy mountain!
      Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble;
      For the day of the LORD is coming,
      For it is at hand:
Why was an alarm sounded? The day of the LORD is coming.
Tu. 7/22/14: Joel 2:10b – 11    What happens on that day?
      The sun and moon grow dark,
      And the stars diminish their brightness.
      The LORD gives voice before His army,
      For His camp is very great;
      For strong is the One who executes His word.
      For the day of the LORD is great and very terrible;
      Who can endure it?
What happens on that day? The sun and moon shall be darkened.
We. 7/23/14: Joel 2:31 – 32a                  Who shall be saved?
      The sun shall be turned into darkness,
      And the moon into blood,
      Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD.
      And it shall come to pass
      That whoever calls on the name of the LORD
      Shall be saved.
Who shall be saved? Whoever calls on Yahweh shall be saved.
Th. 7/24/14: Joel 3:14b – 16a                  Who shall be heard?
      For the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.
      The sun and moon will grow dark,
      And the stars will diminish their brightness.
      The LORD also will roar from Zion,
      And utter His voice from Jerusalem;
      The heavens and earth will shake
Who shall be heard? The LORD shall roar and be heard.
Fr. 7/25/14: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-3                   How does the day come?
But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you.
For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the LORD so comes as a thief in the night. For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape.

How does the day come?  The day shall come as a thief in the night.

Who is King?

Mo. 7/14/14: Ecclesiastes 12:13 – 14                  What was Solomon’s conclusion?
Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter:
      Fear God and keep His commandments,
      For this is man’s all.
      For God will bring every work into judgment,
      Including every secret thing,
What was Solomon’s conclusion? Fear God and keep His commandments.
Tu. 7/15/14: 1 Kings 11:41 – 43                  Solomon’s death
Now the rest of the acts of Solomon, all that he did, and his wisdom, are they not written in the book of the acts of Solomon?
And the period that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty years. Then Solomon rested with his fathers, and was buried in the City of David his father. And Rehoboam his son reigned in his place.
Who followed Solomon? Rehoboam became king.
We. 7/16/14: 2 Chronicles 10:1 – 19                   What did the tribes do?
Now when all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them, the people answered the king, saying:
      “What share have we in David?
      We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse.
      Every man to your tents, O Israel!
      Now see to your own house, O David!”
So all Israel departed to their tents.
But Rehoboam reigned over the children of Israel who dwelt in the cities of Judah.
What did the tribes do? The tribes revolted.
Th. 7/17/14: 1 Kings 12:20                   What did Israel do?
Now it came to pass when all Israel heard that Jeroboam had come back, they sent for him and called him to the congregation, and made him king over all Israel. There was none who followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.
What did Israel do? The tribes made Jeroboam their king.
Fr. 7/18/14: 1 Timothy 6:15 – 16                  Who is the King of kings?
which He will manifest in His own time, He who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen.

Who is the King of kings? The Lord Jesus Christ is King of kings.

Preacher King

Mo. 7/7/14: Ecclesiastes 1:12 – 18                  What wisdom is vain?
I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
And I set my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under heaven; this burdensome task God has given to the sons of man, by which they may be exercised. I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and indeed, all is vanity and grasping for the wind.
What wisdom is vain? Wisdom under the Sun is vain.
Tu., We. 7/8, 9/14: Ecclesiastes 3:1 – 8                  What is time’s purpose?
      To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven:
      A time to be born, And a time to die;
      A time to plant, And a time to pluck what is planted;
      A time to kill, And a time to heal;
      A time to break down, And a time to build up;
      A time to weep, And a time to laugh;
      A time to mourn, And a time to dance;
      A time to cast away stones, And a time to gather stones;
      A time to embrace, And a time to refrain from embracing;
      A time to gain, And a time to lose;
      A time to keep, And a time to throw away;
      A time to tear, And a time to sew;
      A time to keep silence, And a time to speak;
      A time to love, And a time to hate;
      A time of war, And a time of peace.
What is time’s purpose? Time’s purposes are in polar opposite pairs.
Th. 7/10/14: Ecclesiastes 5:6                  What is a rash promise?
Do not let your mouth cause your flesh to sin, nor say before the messenger of God that it was an error. Why should God be angry at your excuse and destroy the work of your hands?
What is a rash promise? A rash promise is made to God, but not kept.
Fr. 7/11/14: James 1:5 – 8                  Who lacks real wisdom?
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

Who lacks real wisdom? If you don’t ask God, you will lack true wisdom.

Scoffer, the Lowest in Proverbs

Mo. 6/30/14: Proverbs 22:8, 10                  What does the scoffer do?
      He who sows iniquity will reap sorrow,
      And the rod of his anger will fail.
      Cast out the scoffer, and contention will leave;
      Yes, strife and reproach will cease.
What does the scoffer do? The scoffer creates contention and strife.
Tu. 7/1/14: Proverbs 21:23 – 24                 What is a scoffer at heart?
      Whoever guards his mouth and tongue
      Keeps his soul from troubles.
      A proud and haughty man—“Scoffer” is his name;
      He acts with arrogant pride.
What is a scoffer at heart?
We. 7/2/14: Proverbs 24:8 – 9                   How does the scoffer affect others?
      He who plots to do evil
      Will be called a schemer.
      The devising of foolishness is sin,
      And the scoffer is an abomination to men.
How does the scoffer affect others? A scoffer is an abomination to men.
Th. 7/3/14: Jude 1:8 –10                  What does a scoffer reject?
Likewise also these dreamers defile the flesh, reject authority, and speak evil of dignitaries.
Yet Michael the archangel, in contending with the devil, when he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him a reviling accusation, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” But these speak evil of whatever they do not know; and whatever they know naturally, like brute beasts, in these things they corrupt themselves.
What does a scoffer reject? A scoffer rejects God’s appointed authorities.
Fr. 7/4/14: 2 Peter 2:1 – 3                  What does the scoffer twist?
But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction.
And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber.
What does the scoffer twist? A scoffer twists the truth.

Proverbial fool

Mo. 6/23/14: Proverbs 16:21 – 22                   What is correcting the fool?
      The wise in heart will be called prudent,
      And sweetness of the lips increases learning.
      Understanding is a wellspring of life to him who has it.
      But the correction of fools is folly.
What is correcting the fool? It is foolish to correct fools.
Tu. 6/24/14: Proverbs 15:21 – 22                  What is the fool’s joy?
      A wise son makes a father glad,
      But a foolish man despises his mother.
      Folly is joy to him who is destitute of discernment,
      But a man of understanding walks uprightly.
What is the fool’s joy? A fool’s joy is lack of discernment.
We. 6/25/14: Proverbs 17:10, 12                  What is ineffective for a fool?
      Rebuke is more effective for a wise man
      Than a hundred blows on a fool…
      Let a man meet a bear robbed of her cubs,
      Rather than a fool in his folly.
What is ineffective for a fool? A fool is unaffected by rebuke or blows.
Th. 6/26/14: Luke 12:16 – 20                  Whom do you store things for?
Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully.
And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’ So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater’ … But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’
Whom do you store things for? If you do not store for God, you are a fool.
Fr. 6/27/14: 1 Corinthians 3:18 – 21a                  Who considers fools as wise?
Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise.
For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their own craftiness”; and again, “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.” Therefore let no one boast in men.
Who considers fools as wise? This world considers some fools as wise.

Who wants to be simple?

Mo. 6/16/14: Proverbs 14:12 – 15                  What confuses the simple?
      There is a way that seems right to a man,
      But its end is the way of death.
      The simple believes every word,
      But the prudent considers well his steps.
What confuses the simple? Believing anyone confuses the simple.
Tu. 6/17/14: Proverbs 14:17 – 18                  What do the simple inherit?
      A quick-tempered man acts foolishly,
      And a man of wicked intentions is hated.
      The simple inherit folly,
      But the prudent are crowned with knowledge.
What do the simple inherit? The simple inherit folly.
We. 6/18/14: Psalm 19:7,10                  How can the simple change?
      The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul;
      The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;
      More to be desired are they than gold,
      Yea, than much fine gold;
      Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.
How can the simple change? The Law makes wise the simple.
Th. 6/19/14: Psalm 119:129 – 130                  How can the simple improve?
      Your testimonies are wonderful;
      Therefore my soul keeps them.
      The entrance of Your words gives light;
      It gives understanding to the simple.
How can the simple improve? Reading the Word gives understanding.
Fr. 6/20/14: Rom. 16:19 – 20                  What should we be simple towards?
For your obedience has become known to all. Therefore I am glad on your behalf; but I want you to be wise in what is good, and simple concerning evil. And the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly.
What should we be simple towards? We should be simple about evil.
