Monday, May 24, 2010: Hebrews 10:8–10, 12-14
Previously saying, “Sacrifice and offering, burnt offerings, and offerings for sin You did not desire, nor had pleasure in them” (which are offered according to the law), then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God.” He takes away the first that He may establish the second. By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God, from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool. For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.
What does ‘He takes away the first to establish the second’ mean? The setting apart of priests from profane people (sanctification) by the blood of bulls and goats is now changed to belief in the perfect sacrifice of Jesus Christ to sanctify us.
Tuesday, May 25, 2010: Hebrews 9:13–14
For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
What is the difference between sanctifying the flesh and cleansing the conscience? The former is an outward cleansing: the latter, an inner setting apart.
Wednesday, May 26, 2010: Hebrews 13:12–15
Therefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people with His own blood, suffered outside the gate. Therefore let us go forth to Him, outside the camp, bearing His reproach. For here we have no continuing city, but we seek the one to come. Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.
Christ offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice: what can we offer? We can only offer our worshipful praise for the finished work of Christ.
Thursday, May 27, 2010: Hebrews 2:10–11
For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. For both He who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified are all of one, for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren
Why is Christ not ashamed to call us brothers? We have been cleansed by His suffering for sin and in Him we are pure and sinless.
Friday, May 28, 2010: Hebrews 10:28–29
Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?
Can a believer do this? No, but someone who knows the Way and rejects it can.
